WANT TO HAVE THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE LEARNING ABOUT WHALES AND DOLPHINS?
Now you can by joining us this fall on special Ocean Trekker Expeditions. The Wild Dolphin Foundation has teamed up with experienced wildlife tour operator
Wild Side Specialty Tours to cruise the Leeward Coast of Oahu, showing you
how to identify cetaceans and interpret their surfacing behaviours as
we pass through some of Hawaii's richest waters for cetacean
diversity and abundance, at a peak time!
The itinerary is arranged around daily expeditions aboard. Alongside professional guides and experienced marine biologist, trekkers experience Hawaii’s amazing ocean life from conservation minded and ecologically sensitive morning journeys. After casual yet informative briefings over dinner, trekkers will sharpen thier field techniques on-board Wild Dolphin Foundation researchers in gathering data by recording behavior, environmental conditions and taking photo I.D.’s of the animals they come in contact with.
“During the Fall months the weather is calm, the ocean is clear, the animals are active and tourism is low. It’s a great time to be on the water” says, Teagan Logan of the Wild Dolphin Foundation.
A highlight of the expedition is the overnighter. After the majority vote of the group, trekkers set sail for brilliant stargazing on a overnight cruise to another island destination such as historic Haleiwa Town, breathtaking Waimea Bay or the exciting nightlife (and shopping!) of Waikiki. It’s a great opportunity to “play tourist” and see O’ahu from a different perspective.
Other activities such as afternoon snorkel trips and visiting cultural sites are optional allowing plenty of time for relaxation and reflection at the tranquil estate of the Makaha Golf Resort where trekkers hang their hat after their day at sea. The first few evenings of the expedition trekkers will have informal yet engaging discussion and lectures regarding team building, safety, conservation, marine biology, and research methods.
The cost for the 7-day expedition is $1895. More details on Hawaii Volunteer Vacations
